Silent Supplication (poem)

Flitting lightly through space like a butterfly
Sipping nectar from newly awoken flower
Innocence dying with birth of a stillborn cry
What new trespass shall bequeath next glower?
Peeling walls yellowed from nicotine and dismay
On encrusted table sloshed bottle a sigil of nightly rituals
Ashen cancerous comfort layers a patina of smoky decay
Antenna quivering, a roach seeks discarded victuals
Stacks of unpaid bills totter like skyscraper on sandbar
Misery totted in columns, ink and desiccated tree
Mute testament once bright dreams envisioned from afar
Arthritically swollen as the joints in a too often bent knee
Whimpering in fear at the creak of a loose stair
Haunted eyes dart toward sound as rabbit seeking fox
Prey feverishly, hoping predator seeks not her lair
Still, silent, listen; creep toward imagined safety’s box
Years ago, love bright with possibility unbounded
Two were joined forever as no man could put asunder
Dashed hopes and dreams show promises unfounded
Harsh words and fists override wind-lashed thunder
Hands that once held her in love’s embrace tight
Ball up in frustration, strike at nearest target
Serenades of romantic music once felt so right
Now alcohol infused furor new horrors beget

Unable to leave, terrified to remain
Affection withered with each slamming door
Where can she go? How to stay sane?
Fly off with Poe’s Raven? Love, like life, Never More
